Being back to the second grade was not what her Daddy and I wanted to hear Madison's teacher say at our meeting with the teacher. Madison was very discouraged at a mere 7 years old. I was worried, honestly. Why was she failing?

I investigated and found out she was significantly behind on her reading. She had no problems doing the daily work if it were read to her. I also found out that grading with letters discouraged her and made her quit trying. Madison struggled to get good grades on her papers; and when she did get an "F", she would cry and blow it off. She had it in her mind that she could not read. Her self-esteem was destroyed at such a tender age.

The decision was made to home educate Madison. She was excited to be with me all day. She was also excited to get to be with her sisters more. She looked up to her older sister and since she was happy to be homeschooled, so was Madison.

Fast forward a few years to today, Madison is a new girl.

Going into the fourth year of homeschooling, Madison has really improved on her reading. She is now excited to read aloud, do papers by herself, and get rewarded for her hard work. I do not use letter grades for her papers to this day. I do not want to bring up old memories or negative feelings. I grade her with love, explanations, and assisting her one-on-one until she 'gets it'. She has learned so much in each subject because she can read now. She does not feel behind like she did when she was in the school setting. She smiles now when reading.

Madison has learned how to read from the Bible. Scriptures that mean a lot to her have helped her memorize things as well.

I am so glad that homeschooling allows you to provide what your child needs and also allows you to teach any way you see fit to assist your child to learn.
My friend wrote this post two years ago. I am just now getting on the blog. I think it is timely. I wonder who needs to hear this today?

Maria was a straight "A" student. Maria was an honor roll student. Every report card she brought to me made me so proud and never disappointed me in the least. Her Daddy and I would pay her $10 for every "A" she made. We would love to spoil her for her hard work and her progress. Maria is a smart, beautiful person.

When I was planning to homeschool Maria, I was scared! I was nervous! I was thinking about taking her away from socialization, good grades and more; however, Maria was excited to start se tenth grade at home. I was making a decision that could ruin her future and her whole life.

In my heart, I felt I should homeschool her and I did just that.

When I brought Maria into the homeschool world, we took a little time off. She was stressed out from getting into a fight and from the other kids picking on her. She was overwhelmed by what she was being taught in health class (i.e. "grown-up stuff"). I thought I really knew my daughter until I began to homeschool her - until I spend a lot of time with her.

On our first day of homeschooling, I gave Maria random tasks to perform. We started with easy tasks and worked our way up to more difficult tasks. For example in math, I gave her double-digit multiplication then division. I quickly came to realize that Maria could not write a complete sentence. Her sentences never ended. I realized we had a lot of work to do.

Maria had no self-confidence. She was always worried about other people and what they thought of her. She never wanted anything - just to be liked. She would never play like a normal child for her age. She wanted to act like an adult. Maria started hanging out with the wrong crowd at school also. This was concerning to me. That could have led her down the wrong road - to many wrong places. I feel I pulled her out of school just in time.

Since I have been homeschooling, Maria has learned so much. She has learned to sew, cook, save money, academics, and more. You are probably wondering. Yes, she can write a complete sentence.

Maria has many interests now that she did not have before home education. She has actually found her passion - animals. She wants to be a veterinarian. She never knew she enjoyed sewing, cooking, or animals before homeschooling.

I will never regret the decision to home educate Maria. It made her realize who she truly is. It has given us a relationship that will last a lifetime.

Update on Maria: SHE IS THRIVING. As a senior in high school, Maria has been hired by a veterinarian's office starting next month. This summer, she saved up her own money to travel, with her family, to see Dr. Pol in Michigan. He is a famous vet there; he inspires her. Her family made many stops along the almost nine-hour drive. How did she save this money? She made bread to sell. She has babysat for me taking care of three small children, cleaning my house and doing my dishes.
Morgan’s Homeschool Progress!

Morgan Akers has been homeschooled approximately three years. Being pulled out of public school after the first six weeks of fifth grade, Morgan was failing almost every class. The stress she was facing (learning difficulty, bullying, depression, socializing issues) made it harder on her health condition.

When [Crystal] decided to homeschool, I thought I was making the biggest mistake of my life. The first year was very hectic. Morgan was so used to writing down anything just to say she was finished. She did not want to take her time and learn the material or become interested in any subject to learn. There were days I would give up and let her rest. I mainly used this time to learn Morgan’s style of learning and getting to know who she really was. When Morgan was in public school I thought I knew my daughter. Until the end of my first year of homeschooling, my whole way of thinking changed.

The second year of homeschooling went a little more smoothly. I’m not saying it wasn’t hard. Morgan seemed to be a little more relaxed. Finding her interests was becoming easier and easier. Morgan finally understood I wanted her to learn what she wanted and nothing less. Morgan did not know how to multiply the easiest problems; subtracting was very difficult to understand as well. Answering a question to a story we had read was impossible. Morgan was definitely not interested in any science or history. This year’s focus was learning mainly what my daughter needed to catch up on at home. Through Morgan’s second year of homeschooling, she learned the basics of multiplication, subtraction, and found out she loved to learn about the human body. Learning how to comprehend a story and then ask and answer questions was still a work in progress.

Morgan’s handwriting was terrible also. She did not take pride in her work or even care if I could read it. She did not know how to write most lower case letters and always used uppercase letters when writing sentences. I had to reteach these skills.

I also found out something else. Morgan was really interested in piano! Toward the end of the second year, she was excited about learning how to play the piano. This was toward the end of our second year of homeschooling. I felt this was a start to new beginning. This year ended and was a very rewarding one. I signed Morgan up for piano lessons.

Morgan’s third year of homeschooling has been the greatest year so far. Morgan has progressed in self-care. She can wash her hair all by herself, do her chores, respond and interact better with family, friends, siblings and both parents. She has an eagerness to learn as well! She has mastered multiplication and is learning division now. Her handwriting has tremendously improved – upper and lower cases. Punctuation is also used.

She was very excited to learn about the presidency and asked questions about elections. She has begun to be more interested in the human body as well as being healthy.

Morgan played her first sport this year! She chose to play basketball. She made great progress as the season advanced. Morgan is making more friends every day. She is becoming more open to socializing and learning how each person is different.

Morgan never had a “When I grow up I want to be a ….” answer. Now she does. She wants to be a chiropractor. To hear those words was music to my ears.

Morgan has 100% improved in every subject. She has continued with piano for a little over one year and is almost in her third piano book. When we have hard days homeschooling, we will learn by using examples from music. She plays the piano with confidence even in front of the camera for her Facebook audience. She had zero confidence in any area before homeschooling. Her eye and hand coordination is better than it has ever been.

Morgan has blown my mind. She is actually my daughter that I did not know. Now, she is my daughter that I do know and is very smart in her own way.

-Crystal Akers

I’ve learned that Morgan has a few special needs. She was previously in special education classes for some subjects but was not learning because the work was done for her a lot of the time. I noticed this year as I was at her house for something that she appeared differently. She looked me in the eye and did not look away, as she had always in the past. She has played the piano for me and wanted to play this time as well. I asked Crystal to write a story about her progress and wanted to share with you.

How have you seen your child improve since being homeschooled?

HOW DID IT FEEL being at the Beckley Campus?A few years ago I did a series on Classical Conversation with very negative tones a couple years ago. Well, it was worse than negative tones, perhaps if you were in love with the program.... I received a lot of flack for it (and support for the people who had not agreed with some techniques of the program.) HOWEVER, I recently revisited this program focusing on a Beckley, WV campus. Joy Browning, as the new Beckley CC director, invited me to observe and see how I felt as I observed the entire day.

From the moment I arrived, I could feel the Holy Spirit directing the speakers, the children and the parents who were very interactive with each other. I could see genuine smiles on their faces for each other - not just for my benefit. The students greeted me with smiles too. Some teen boys were a bit rowdy at times during the opening ceremonies, but it did not bother me or take away from the overall feel of the moment.

I felt welcomed to their community. I felt warmth, love, & appreciation for attending.

Here's more of what I observed about the entire community.

Dress -- The ladies were all dressed so nicely with no particular dress code that could be detected; some wore modern jeans and a fashionable army blazer or a flowing blouse, while others wore a Sunday dress. The women and students were all modest and humble. Students were dressed nicely too. No particular dress code, yet a good variety of casual, Christian attire.

Lunch -- Most of the ladies sat with children, yet some ladies sat with other ladies; no particular pattern was observed. During lunch, there was a vendor from Melaleuca that had set up his wares. This was done to support Stephanie Plumley and her quest for natural cleaning items and other natural products to which she subscribes. Joy explained that the community tries to support others' venues for making additional money, because as moms we should be supportive however we can. And if one mom loves a company, others may also. Anyone can participate in the lunch vendor program. Another mom sells Matilda Jane clothing. Everyone supports each other as best they can.

After lunch, we went to more classes for the older students in Essentials and Challenge areas. These students were still engaged. There was a person available to look out for students who did not participate in the afternoon classes. She charged $2/hour/kid. This was a blessing as I had two littles who could not attend afternoon classes. The littles played in the gym, sang, and ran. These kids were exhausted by 3:30 pm!!!

Overall I had a great time and would highly recommend this community to others who are looking to classically educate their child with a group; this is the place to be. I also have others who participate in the Shady Spring Campus, about 30 minutes away. I have friends who attend there, and they are thrilled with their campus too. I have recently spoken with a few of them on how they like CC and the campus at "Shady".

I was invited to attend the end -of -the -year program. I LOVED it. The best part was when Miranda Guzman told Joy Browning while offering her a gift,

"You've nurtured and supported us all year."

Nurtured is a very unique, strong word. This word made me feel like a great overall word for the program/campus in our areas.

Nurtured.

I had heard Classical Conversations (CC) offered a High School option that was unable to be done at home. A previous CC director had shared that with me.... The other levels, practically speaking, could be done at home but Challenge levels require discussions, interaction, and thinking skills. "Conversation" takes place here.

I observed the Challenge II class with Diana Harer. I heard words, phrases, and sentences from the students such as the following:

"I'm fasting for Lent."
"The media portrays what they want to portray."
"The media could twist any scenario."
"ACLU"
"Utilitarian"
"Worldview"

These conversations I had seen nowhere else! High school students were comfortable speaking publically, displaying their feelings, and communicating their thoughts. The students watched a video segment 9 of a series from <span style="background-color: white; font-family: "chronicle display a" , "chronicle display b" , serif; letter-spacing: -0.03em;">Francis Schaeffer's How Should We Then Live? See here for the corresponding book. The tutor then discussed the segment and asked questions drawing points about the author's purpose.
The students followed with a lab on the Embryology of Eggs. The students do a lab after reading a Module in their Apologia Biology Curriculum. The tutor is responsible for creating the lab setting for the students; they used a note-booking technique the day I was there. They kept an ongoing notebook for science. Students research their science module prior to coming to class for discussion and actual labs.

Math or Logic is dependent on the students in the class; depending on the level of math the students are proficient, determines the lessons for the week. Saxon is recommended but not required. Parents are in full control of their math education and are responsible for the student's learning. With different math levels occurring in the classroom, the tutor may go over a formula, solving for an unknown, or an algebra concept. Algebra II is the goal for the students in Challenge II, but not necessary. This will change depending on the group of students and in which Challenge they are placed.

Reading and writing are quite impressive. Here is a reading list of British Literature books available for purchase for 2017-18 (the catalog that I have was updated for the new school year; CCs 20th anniversary).

Beowulf
Selected Canterbury Tales
Sir Gawain and the Green Knight
Paradise Lost
The Pilgrim's Progress (the original version)
Gulliver's Travels
Pride and Prejudice
A Tale of Two Cities
Jane Eyre
Animal Farm
Favorite Father Brown Stories
The Hobbit
The Screwtape Letters

These books are not all simply read but are utilized as an interval of three weeks worth of simultaneous writing activities. Characters are studied; plot and setting discussed. An essay on each book is written during the three weeks. The tutor teaches to write a simple essay and a new element is added each week to complete a goal for writing a substantial essay by the end of the school year (with a thesis, antitheses, and synthesis. For more information on this, click here).

The biggest question for many will be where does the money go? I had disliked the idea that money would be paid for these lessons; however, after spending the day at CC with the amount of preparation that I observed from these tutors, it could be well worth the money. The tutor is paid for their preparation, "grading" (although the parent is responsible for actual grades and the degree to which the tutor oversees the work), and labs or activities. The tuition covers their prep time for the lesson and for the actual day of lesson presentation. This cost could be seen as astronomical, but for the preparation that I saw, it could be well worth the investment. These essays and reading lists are not seen anywhere else! College English 101 is basically essay writing, and, with the right tutor, a student could easily pass an English 101 after sitting in this Challenge course for one year.

Diana Harer would be well worth the money/investment. She is humble, calm, approachable, intelligent, and cheerful. She realizes the parent is the real teacher; she does not act haughty even though she is going through this level of High School, learning right along with them.

These CC days are also filled with music, art, Latin, and debate, but I did not observe these on my day; I wish I had a more time in the day to spend listening to these mature teens as well as their lovely 'tutor'. I'll see if I can squeeze more time into observe another wonderful and fulfilling Beckley campus day. Enjoy this short video of the discussion time!

Jennifer Bradford and Jessica Wingrove are the parents over the Challenge I program. Jennifer Bradford is the director, and Jessica Wingrove is the tutor for this level. My oldest daughters attended classes with these beautiful ladies. There were about five other students in the class. Jessica and I talked about the program and what the students had accomplished this year. She discussed her prep time which was a day of getting ready for her areas. Jennifer and Jessica split their areas of expertise into two parts so each one has a more focused tutoring subject. In other words, I feel like they are more specialized in their areas.

The students had studied American Government, Latin, Economics, Physical Science, Introduction to Debate, Shakespeare, Music Theory, Algebra and business math, and American Literature. Their reading list was quite impressive for this level,

Reading List Challenge I

The Sign of the Beaver
The Call of the Wild
Johnny Tremain
The Red Badge of Courage
The Scarlett Letter
Billy Budd, Sailor
Up From Slavery
Narrative Life of Fredrick Douglass
The Old Man and the Sea
An Old-Fashioned Girl
The Witch of Blackbird Pond

These books are taught with a perspective of learning to pick out the good and bad by making a list of Good, Negative, and Interesting facts regarding characters and situations. The students then pick positions based upon their lists and then discuss/debate these opinions. I have not seen anything like this in any school setting anywhere. Here is a link with a similar process to explain the idea further. Positive Negative Interesting

In Shakespeare, the students studied Tales from Shakespeare and The Taming of the Shrew. I still remember this from my high school days. After reading the book my 9th-grade class watched Elizabeth Taylor as the "Shrew".

The students studied Apologia Science's Exploring Creation with Physical Science by Jay Wile. For Dr. Wile's website, click here. The students did experiments on the days they were in class. They prepared and read a module a week or sometimes a module every two weeks, depending on the difficulty level. this is quite impressive. Parents are responsible for the completion of the work at home and how difficult or in depth, it is covered. All lab equipment and supplies are covered in the supply fees.

The day I attended the students had done their lessons, rehearsed for an end-of-year program, and were playing Monopoly Empire to mimic the elements they had learned in Economics. These students have a full day ending at 3 pm.

It was a busy day that was impressive, to say the least. I did not get pictures of this group. I apologize!
I was quite confused regarding their naming system and ‘grade levels’. There are no formal grade levels with Classical Conversations (CC) or other classical education philosophies. With most homeschooling methods, parents meet the child where they are academically and move forward, reviewing often. The levels for CC for the Foundations are in the following order: Abecedarians (a person who is just learning; a novice), Apprentice I, Apprentice II, Journeymen, and Masters.

Parents and tutors decide at what level to place their child if newly entering CC. If a student begins with Classical Conversations, he or she follows the sequential levels from the beginning advancing as appropriate. Abecedarians were for 3-6 years old. Apprentice I was from 6-7 and so on. There is overlap for the benefit of the individual child. A mature child can move on while one who is not ready can stay behind for another year or even a semester.

After The Foundations levels, the Essentials group would be considered the early middle school. Challenge A & B would be junior high and Challenge I, II, III, IV would be high school levels. These specific levels are added each year as needed.

If there are more than eight students, Joy Browning says, they add another tutor and potentially a whole new room. A tutor to student ratio of 1:8 is quite impressive. This allows personal attention and clarification if something is not understood, as well as more assistance with projects that are done in class, because, remember, moms also stay to learn the teaching methods for the week - the tips and tricks to the weekly lessons.

Amanda Schmidt did a public speaking segment, where the students were allotted a certain amount of time for this week’s goal - impromptu speeches. The students do a different type of speech each week or so, but ultimately the parents oversee the speech and the topic. I was completely impressed with the ease of which the students went to the podium. One student, Andrew Jones, had to talk about his favorite thing do this summer. He mostly talked about baseball, his family’s history of the love for baseball, who his favorite teams were, his position on the team, and much more. The tutor had to call time. The audience sat quietly with eyes focused on Andrew. A few giggles were heard, but nothing disrespectful. He asked if there were any questions at the end.
For those who may not know, I did a review of Classical Conversations a few years ago and did not give it a rave review. I had heard of these Campuses getting new leadership in our area, so I wanted to review this educational tool again. Joy Browning, a friend of a friend, invited me via Facebook to observe the Beckley Campus, where she serves as director. Here is the first post in a series....

I arrived at 9:15 am. These smiling faces were prompt, as they had begun the Pledge of Allegiance to the American Flag, Pledge to the Christian Flag, and Pledge to the Holy Bible as I walked into the huge foyer of CrossPoint Church. I stopped to be respectful of the pledges and then found a place in the back as I awaited the next activity. Little did I know, the next activity was the introduction of visitors, of whom I was first. Joy Browning, a petite, young, well-dressed lady invited me to the front of the circle of about 60 moms, children, dads, and teens. Joy introduced me to the group and mentioned that I could do end - of - year - portfolios for them; I was there to observe today to see what Classical Conversations was all about under the new leadership. She also introduced Angela Single, another mom who was interested in the Beckley Campus of Classical Conversations. She had recently moved into the area from a nearby town.

The older students were dismissed with their tutors (these parents are not called teachers, but tutor fits their position well). I watched as the younger students were given seating arrangements in the foyer that resembled the orchestra. The teachers held posters for the students, who sang in rounds, the 'song of the orchestra'. The special seating was to show the students the specified arrangement of the orchestra in a symphony. This activity fulfilled their weekly goal for fine arts learning the orchestra and composers Brahms and Dvorak. Students would learn more about these men in their classes in an age-appropriate fashion.

We were then dismissed to the classrooms. I followed Stephanie Plumley to “Abecedarian” class. These were students who were 3-6 years old. My two younger children went along. The Foundations ABC group is for 3-6 year-olds, Apprentice classes, for 6-7 years olds. There are potentially two Apprentice classes if needed. This makes placing your child where they are, educationally efficient. There is no pressure at these young ages to perform. They are all there to have fun, learn chants, songs, American Sign Language, and to play with one another. Mrs. Plumley used sign language to show the students a timeline song, which is the same each year. These students hear the timeline song each year and build on it week-by-week. My day’s part of the song added, “In 1990, President Bush sent troops to the Persian Gulf to expel Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein from Kuwait during the Gulf War.” I learned, though Joy and Stephanie as well as Angela Single, that there are options for each smaller child. Some are mature enough to move up at six and some may remain in the current class for another year. It is up to the parent to decide.
There were a few boys wiggling, one looking down, and most were very engaged. The students had just completed a map coloring sheet prior to my entrance; some were still working on that. The classroom management was efficient, yet seemed non-existent. Children knowing that parents are on-site would keep discipline problems to a minimum. The tutors do not discipline any child; however, they will send a room parent to get the disruptive child's parent if needed. There is a ‘meet the child where they are’ mentality no pressure to perform at a certain level.
As I researched this, I realized that to do a great review of my day at Classical Conversations Campus in Beckley, I needed to share the thoughts behind this different method of education. Here are my notes, most of which are from Wikipedia for the preciseness of the information. Enjoy. I'll be back soon to discuss the actual visit to the campus.

Stages of our current education system date back to "Classical Education"

Primary education teaches students how to learn (k-12th grades)

Secondary education teaches a mental framework that can contain history, understands basic facts and practices of multiple subjects, and also develops the skills of these subjects (undergraduate degree)

Tertiary education then prepares a person to pursue a profession (graduate education)

Primary education

In classical terms, primary education was the trivium comprising grammar, logic, and rhetoric.

Grammar

Grammar consists of skills such as reading and writing - to acquire as many words and manage as many concepts as possible.

Logic and rhetoric were often taught by the Socratic method. (A form of discussion between individuals, based on asking and answering questions to stimulate critical thinking and to illuminate ideas)

Logic

Logic is the process of correct reasoning and refers to the middle school aged student, who developmentally is beginning to question and enjoys debating or arguing with others. Practice in logic lets students evaluate arguments. The goal is to train the student's mind not only to grasp information, but to find connections between different ideas, to find why something is true or false.

Rhetoric

Rhetorical debate and composition are taught to high school students, who by this point in their education have the concepts and logic to criticize their own work and persuade others. The student now learns to articulate answers to important questions in her own words, to persuade others with facts, and to defend ideas against rebuttal.
Under the new law the parent or legal guardian must submit the results of the academic assessment to the superintendent for grades 3, 5, 8, and 11.
When do I have to submit assessments? The assessments must be submitted by June 30 of the year they are administered for 3rd, 5th, 8th, and 11th grades. How long do I have to keep assessment results? A parent or legal guardian must maintain copies of the academic assessment for three years.
Do I still have the portfolio option? Yes. Parents still have the same 4 assessment options: 1) a nationally normed standardized achievement test 2) the current state testing program 3) certified teacher portfolio review 4) an alternative assessment mutually agreed upon by the parent and superintendent.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">So each year an assessment needs to be accomplished as always; however, with the new law, these assessment forms from your reviewer need to be turned into the board of education after the following grades: 3rd, 5th, 8th, and 11th grades.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">
I'm scheduling portfolio assessments now and hope to conclude by June 30th. Does the assessment need to be completed only after you are finished with the school year? No, I understand that many homeschool families school year around and/or start after Labor Day, so they naturally go later. Each school is different, and I evaluate as such.
I will destroy the wisdom of the wise and will bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent. -1 Cor 1:19kjv

The most beautiful illustration of the text is Moses. Moses had the wisdom of the wise. He had learned all the wisdom of Egypt, studying biology, philosophy, political science, mathematics, geometry, and world history. Yet what did God need of all that wisdom to make Moses a deliverer? The answer: none of it!

God had to put Moses into a forty year re-education program in the very wilderness where he was later to lead the nation of Isreal. God had to teach Moses the wisdom of the Lord; lessons of utter dependence upon Him and of not leaning upon his own understanding.

When it was time for Moses to lead Isreal into the wilderness, he had to forget what he knew about the land's desolate agricultural state. He had to forget about its impossible climate of scorching heat during the day and sometimes freezing temperatures at night. He had to forget about eh lack of lakes and rivers. He had to forget about protesting to God, "This will not work! I have been there." Moses' faith enabled him to take Isreal into a wilderness that, barring quick and powerful miracles, could cause them to perish within a week's time.

Moses had to exchange the wisdom of the wise with the wisdom of God to make his faith work. So, God sent a cloud to cool His people by day and a pillar of fire to warm them by night. He sent bread from the sky and water from the rocks. He made for Isreal a place of life in an otherwise uninhabitable wilderness. But God could not do that until He had a man whose earthy wisdom could be laid aside in order to favor the wisdom of God. So, whose wisdom are you operating on: the wisdom of man or the wisdom of God. -Reimar Shultze

Is it a waste of time to learn biology, philosophy, political science, math, geometry or world history? NO! But what is important is that your child knows that the most important aspect of his or her education is FAITH IN GOD! Knowing that God will provide what we need, when we need, it is the biggest lesson parents can give children. Life with new kiddos has gotten in the way. I want to post about that later.
I have done a few Facebook Live posts. One was "Simple Starting Points" for new homeschoolers. The other so far was "Rest!"
Please feel free to look at these and leave feedback. I'd like to vlog here as well!!! That may be down the pike! Anyway, here is a link to the Facebook Page. Make sure to like it....
Our area college has a branch called Alpine Ministries. Alpine Ministries provides opportunities for physical education. Be creative with exercise and have fun like we did one day during the winter. Rock wall climbing is a great way to practice a skill and get the heart rate going. Another advantage is having your friends cheer you on as you climb.

Physical Education? Education? I teach health. Is that good enough?

For homeschool purposes, just get out and move. Teach your children to be active. Share a passion for walking the neighborhood (after school hours or truant officers may be called) or running. Did you play baseball in your youth? Play that with your child. Swimming at the YMCA would count as PE. It need not be formal, but needs to be purposeful. Have fun.

Here are a few pics of our PE one day:

What activities do you enjoy for PE?homeschoolingconsultationhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09324099618154469518noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-743665114900373627.post-70130365087882519642016-07-01T12:28:00.000-07:002016-07-01T12:28:01.021-07:00# 1 questionOften I get asked what curriculum I use. I don't know how to answer that. I don't really use curriculum like others. If I have an A Beka book, we don't do the tests, worksheets, or quizzes. I utilize it as a resource more than my map for what the kids will be doing.

I'd like to say we utilize a delight-directed learning approach. My children and I are interested in many things, but we don't always get to study these topics.

I recently found a website Noah's Ark Homeschool. I really enjoy looking over their pages. Here is a page with free sites. I have to say I use the internet A LOT to teach. I use Blendspace to correlate our topics into a place where they can be streamlined into a unit study of sorts.

See if you can find a few gems of free curricula for the upcoming school year on the following site:

Ruth Beechick confirmed the idea of my older children helping with the younger. This is a natural process. Here's a picture that shows the beauty of the process.

Ideas for having older children help are as follows:

1. Phonics

2. Flashcards

3. Preparing healthy snacks

4. Teaching games (checkers, tic-tac-toe, dominos, memory)

5. Telling time

6. Multiplication

7. Counting money

I wanted to share it with you since we did a trial run of it this semester.

Why not put all the free learning sights into one place for myself when I'm trying to find free classes for my children. No, they don't get the college credit; however, I want them to have classes at a certain 'level' without paying for these. Two of my girls will be in 8th grade. We did a trial run with it recently and my girls took classes they have an interest in....

I'm planning on starting this year assigning credit to them for high school. This is the perfect way to do it without spending a dime.

1. Ask your child what he wants to be or what field most interests him.
2. Search for a few courses (see below) that are basic enough to let him learn the basics of the field or area of study.
3. Sign up for and let them take one or two of these courses. The child should be involved with choosing the course.
4. Participate with your child in the class by asking what he is learning, what are the assignments, or watch a lecture with him.
5. Print the certificate or create your own to show completion.
6. Do further research on the same topic as the class and formulate a presentation if no tests were given in the class. Like plan field trips or other learning on the same topic. See below for pics of our recent field trips and learning activities.
7. Start the process again.

Where should you begin looking for these type of classes / courses? I've created a listing of these classes on Blendspace. Start here. Free Learning Sites for High School via Blendspace.

I read this article. It brought me to tears. In all sincerity,it is so true....

You know those days when you want to quit being mom? Those days, you secretly wish your husband would call you and tell you to get out of your pj’s because someone will be over in 10 min to help you! Those days you just don’t want to practice patience, or deep breathing, or routine. You know.
It’s still dark out, yet he is ready to start his day so I start mine, whether I’m prepared or not. Because he needs me. Not just part of me. EVERY part of me. And so we just do. The diaper changes, and the tower building, and tractor noises, and the whining, and the tantrums, and the eating breakfast sprawled out on the kitchen floor, and the kisses, and the I love you’s.
And the reminders. The frustration. The clean-up. The repetition. The watching of the clock. And the worries. Do I measure up? Can I actually raise, soon to be 2, smart, loving, contributing, faithful men? The pressure sits heavy on my chest.
Because I see things you don’t.
I see the time I lost all control with my 18 month old for pulling everything out of the bathroom drawer and scolded “You are naughty!” Or the time I made my toddler stand outside my bedroom door so I could regain a moment of sanity and maturity. Or the time I dismissed playing blocks because I had 3 weeks of piled up laundry to put away. Or the time I relied on Peppa the Pig to babysit my son so I could work my business for an hour.
Or the time I snapped at my husband because he doesn’t understand why there are toys scattered through every inch of the house when he gets off work, or the pressure I sometimes feel because I take on too much, or the 973 compartments I am sorting through in my brain on a daily basis. I see the times I check out forcing him to take on daddy duty from the minute he steps in the door until the minute he puts our son to bed.
Am I alone in wondering if failing is the only way to learn? Like am I doing enough? Are we doing this thing right? Then I remember. Being a mama bear, is hard. Some days, it’s just really. flippin. hard.
It requires more strength than you could ever lift in a weight room. Because love is heavy. But no matter how hard or heavy those moments are we keep going don’t we. We juggle as many balls as we can while holding on tight to our coffee.
But we keep going. Because at the end of the day…it doesn’t matter how long we stayed in our 4 day old jammies. Or if we lost our temper. Or drank a glass of wine at 3 pm. Or clung to the end of our rope until Daddy got home. What matters is our touch, our time, our eyes and our ears. What matters is taking a second to sing the ABC’s and the giggles while playing cars and the dancing to Mickey Mouse and the hugs when frustration sets in and they can’t tell you why. Even if you’re on your 2nd can of dry shampoo for the week.
Man, we love our babies fierce. Through the catering, the cursing, the cuddling. So fierce.
Let those moments be your reminder that you ARE enough. You ARE doing a good job. And your child loves you more than you’ll ever know. Your work counts. Even the unseen at 3 am. Your to-do list, your lack of organization, your disorientation of time...those things don’t define you, nor does the opinion of others. Just keep going. Let’s keep going.

I'm thankful to everyone who has participated, from praying to keeping the nursery, you are appreciated.

With our coop starting on week two, I decided to continue the devotions in the morning for our moms - a kind of class for them before they go about their duties. I am sure the Lord led me to this devotion on "Rivalry" regarding Mary and Martha. If you have gone to church for two Sundays in a row, these two ladies have been mentioned, I'm sure.

As moms, I can sometimes see the comparative spirit that rises up either when someone else has a fantastic idea or when a mom shares what her child has accomplished. There is NOTHING wrong with sharing! It is the spirit in which we share these things that may hinder others. Moms are proud of their children, no doubt....however, by boasting about our children, we may cause other moms to feel inferior or that they are doing less. In our coop, I shared that we are a support group first and foremost. We should build one another up, edify, encourage and love one another - that includes each others children.

My comments are in other colors from the original writing.

<div class="_5pbx userContent" data-ft="{"tn":"K"}" id="js_3" style="background-color: white; color: #141823; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; line-height: 1.38; overflow: hidden;">

Rivalry

Sweet milk turns sour from being too warm too long.
Sweet dispositions turn sour for the same reason. Let aggravation stew without a period of cooling down, and the result ? A bad, bitter, clabberish attitude.

<div class="_5pbx userContent" data-ft="{"tn":"K"}" id="js_3" style="background-color: white; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.38; overflow: hidden;">

It’s the story of Martha. A dear soul given to hospitality and organization. More frugal than frivolous, more practical than pensive. Ask her to choose between a book and a broom, and she’ll take the broom. WHAT? Who could choose a broom over a book??? Unbelievable to me. Just kidding - it takes all different types of schools to make homeschooling, in general, successful. My 'school' doesn't look like yours. I may have a very structured day with bathroom breaks allotted and lists of lists to accomplish each hour. You may say, "Hey kids, pile up on the couch and let's read this magazine article. We're going out to Chick-Fil-A later so you can play while I meet with a friend. Bring a book for the drive." Which one is better? It depends on the day of the week, the child, the mom, the curriculum, the book, and a million more factors? In fact, I can't judge which is better, because I do not know your child, your style of learning or teaching, or the tasks which you need to accomplish. Some moms work from home; some moms have vibrant ministries to attend to as well as home school.

<div class="_5pbx userContent" data-ft="{"tn":"K"}" id="js_3" style="font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.38; overflow: hidden;">

Mary, however, will take the book. Mary is Martha’s sister. Same parents, different priorities. Martha has things to do. Mary has thoughts to think. This goes to prove that each child is different and has different priorities to attend to - this makes the entire world of homeschooling go round.

<div class="_5pbx userContent" data-ft="{"tn":"K"}" id="js_3" style="background-color: white; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.38; overflow: hidden;">

Apparently Martha worried too much, too. So much so that she started bossing God around. Worry will do that to you. It makes you forget who’s in charge. Don't worry about what others are doing. Focus on the priorities that God has directed YOU to accomplish. Let Him guide your homeschool.

<div class="_5pbx userContent" data-ft="{"tn":"K"}" id="js_3" style="background-color: white; color: #141823; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.38; overflow: hidden;">

What makes this case interesting, however, is that Martha is worried about something good. She’s having Jesus over for dinner. Her aim was to please Jesus. But, as she began to work for him her work became more important than her Lord. What began as a way to serve Jesus, slowly and subtly became a way to serve self.

<div class="_5pbx userContent" data-ft="{"tn":"K"}" id="js_3" style="background-color: white; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.38; overflow: hidden;">

One look at the flour-covered scowl will tell you that. “That Mary. Here I am alone in the kitchen while she’s out there." Confession is good for the soul. I confess that I have had this attitude with my family when I'm busy working and they are all spending time together having fun. HOW COULD THEY? Don't they love me? Don't they want me to join them? Why won't they help me and then I can join in all the fun? Nevermind... I don't wanna be there with them; I'll never get ALL MY WORK done.... ---Have you had similar thoughts? I could easily say this same thing about my coop work. All the planning and scheduling and replanning and rescheduling and reworking and planning for what? No one appreciates it. THIS IS A LIE of the devil that he wants you to believe so you will be frustrated, think everyone is ungrateful and you will quit the calling that you are called to accomplish. Don't believe the lies. Keep serving others joyfully.

<div class="_5pbx userContent" data-ft="{"tn":"K"}" id="js_3" style="background-color: white; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.38; overflow: hidden;">

Oh boy. She’s miffed. Look at her glaring over her shoulder through the doorway. That’s Mary she’s staring at. The one seated on the floor, listening to Jesus. “ Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me alone to do all the work? Tell her to help me" ( Luke 10:40 ). Others can see the frustration on your face; it is not becoming. Joyfully serve. Don't order others around but help them find their calling and build them up to do the job they are called to accomplish for the kingdom. AND we have much to accomplish for the kingdom. We are rearing a new generation for the LORD's army. Do not take this lightly. Spend time at the feet of Jesus and then get the broom out to work.

<div class="_5pbx userContent" data-ft="{"tn":"K"}" id="js_3" style="background-color: white; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.38; overflow: hidden;">

It’s easy to forget who is the servant and who is to be served. Help us never to have an attitude that God needs to tell OTHERS what to do. We need to be focused on our calling, our journey, our purpose.

<div class="_5pbx userContent" data-ft="{"tn":"K"}" id="js_3" style="background-color: white; color: #141823; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.38; overflow: hidden;">

Satan knows that. This tool of distortion is one of Satan’s slyest. Note : He didn’t take Martha out of the kitchen; he took away her purpose in the kitchen. He won’t take you away from your ministry; He’ll disillusion you in your ministry.

<div class="_5pbx userContent" data-ft="{"tn":"K"}" id="js_3" style="background-color: white; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.38; overflow: hidden;">

Guard your attitude. This can be one of the most difficult things when we are surrounded by many other women. Yes, I said that. Women tend to be catty. That is our flesh. We need not be defensive, questioning others' motives, or judging. We don't need to compare ourselves to other moms. There should be no mommy wars - especially in the body of Christ. We are supposed to be much more mature than that.

<div class="_5pbx userContent" data-ft="{"tn":"K"}" id="js_3" style="background-color: white; color: #141823; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.38; overflow: hidden;">

What matters more than the type of service is the heart behind the service. A bad attitude spoils the gift we leave on the altar for God.

<div class="_5pbx userContent" data-ft="{"tn":"K"}" id="js_3" style="background-color: white; overflow: hidden;">

God has gifted you with talents. He has done the same to your neighbor. If you concern yourself with your neighbor’s talents, you will neglect yours. But if you concern yourself with yours, you could inspire both. Dear Mom, please don't think you are doing a sub-par job on your homeschooling! Don't compare your school room with mine. Don't compare your school lunch with Martha's. Know that when you and Jesus meet in the mornings, He will direct you to the curriculum, schedule, support group, and comrades that you will need to feel successful. AND, you then can inspire other moms who may be new or feeling sub-par.

Some concerned with those who are drowning, are snatching people from the water. Others are occupied with the enemy, so they man the cannons of prayer and worship. Still others devote themselves to the crew, feeding and training the crew members. Though different we are the -same. We all have varying roles in our coop - cooperative - a word that connotes working together for a common goal. The ship will not sink. For that, there is no concern. We are in a battle dear mom. You have chosen to take your child out of the school system - public or private - and Satan does not like this. You now have a target on your back, because, if you are like me, the main lesson you're trying to teach child(ren) is to love the LORD and to follow HIS purpose for their life. Since you are on a battleship, be ready for the attacks. Answer the attack with the Word of God. Remember that we war not against flesh and blood - the people who are causing any difficulty are not the ones to whom we become angry. The real enemy is Satan and His purpose is to steal (your family, child, marriage); kill (you physically, mentally, or emotionally - or all the above); and destroy (your reputation, your family's testimony, or the good you're doing in your 'schooling') BUT WE HAVE THE VICTORY - remember that and remind Satan.

There is concern, however, regarding the disharmony of the crew. Unity creates belief. Disunity fosters disbelief. Who wants to board a ship of bickering sailors? Life on the ocean may be rough, but at least the waves don't call us names... Could it be that unity is the key to reaching the world for Christ? Any time you have more than one person in a ministry, there will be the possibility for disunity. Realize that this is another area Satan wants to steal, kill and destroy - our fellowship and edification of one another. Satan whispers in your ear, "She's different; I don't like her...." or any of another million lies to sew discord among the brethren. We need to guard against this occurrence in our group and support each other - much more so as THE DAY draws closer to HIS return!
I feel like doing more work, have more energy, and can think faster when these are diffusing in my house.
These oils seem to create a calm focus for my children, especially ones with ADHD. The first time I used Vetiver was when a prescription had lapsed and the pharmacy had issues with staffing a pharmacist. It happened to be opening day of baseball/softball. My ADHD child was spot on, down and ready, and acted 'normal' when I asked how she did at the opening ceremony. [I could not spot her among all the girls in red.]. Serenity smells amazing (quite the opposite of Vetiver); and contains lavender among other oils that reduce mind - racing, perhaps. It is also used at night to sleep. I diffuse Serenity, but use Vetiver neat (one drop on the spine).
I will give my girls a bandanna that has a few drops of lavender or Serenity on it. The girls wear it or place it on their pillow. I've also made lavender pillow spray which is simply water (distilled) with 10 drops of lavender in a glass spray bottle. I spray my own pillow each night as well as the bassinet for the baby to get a fresh scent and lull her to sleep.
I’ve heard stories of children that are homeschooled and
actually sit and do their schoolwork.
There are rumors of children who will curl up on a couch and listen to
someone read to them. I’ve often
wondered if this child really exists (or
is it similar to the 4 month old that sleeps all night?)?

All I know is that, as a mom to two active boys, quiet
time isn’t a regular occurrence in my home. My boys are 6 and 8 and are into everything. They want to know everything, do everything,
and see everything. It can be exhausting
for this introverted mother.

This translates into a homeschool with very little table
work. When I first started homeschooling
my oldest with kindergarten, I had visions of what school should look like (school at home) and what our days would
be like (beautifully dressed children
peacefully working and never, ever running amok). I was in for a big
surprise.

My boys love to be read to, especially my oldest. But, they do not love cuddling on the couch
for a read. When I figured out that my
older son listened and retained what I was reading better if he jumped on his
bed while I read, I was surprised to say the least. How can
he learn if he’s not being quiet and still?

It was an
experiment. I was at the end of my rope and thinking homeschooling will never
work. Everything was a fight. He hated
the math. He hated the read alouds. He hated school. I hated school. As a last ditch effort, I allowed him to jump
while I read. When we were at a friend’s
home later that week, I heard him telling her what he had learned. He was listening!! I couldn't believe it! Could this work?

Shortly after, I started teaching the math using
manipulatives and ditched the worksheets.
He stopped hating math.

So, when my extra wiggly youngest son came up for
kindergarten, I was ready. Expect now we
had bunk beds and no jumping could take place.
Except the math manipulatives were a bust and the curriculum I had
chosen (for wiggly kids!) was a
miserable failure. He refused to hold a
pencil or do any handwriting! Cue sad mommy.
By October, I was again ready to pull my hair out.

I started googling and trying to find what other mothers
of extra wiggly boys use. I prayed and
thought, and read (rinse and repeat). Desperate, I ordered some things to keep his
hands busy, bought some essential oils to help with focus, and ordered the
biggest child sized bounce ball I could find.

I dropped everything except phonics and math. This extra wiggly 5 year old had about 30 minutes
worth of work in him and no more. In
order to minimize frustration on both of our parts, I started using a
timer. I learned that he could sit for
instruction for 5 minutes at any one time.
Any longer and it all fell apart.
So, I set the timer for 5 minutes.
When it went off, I had my Wiggly Wonder get on his bounce ball and
bounce his way from one end of the house and back (we called it his horse).
When he got back, he was out of breath and ready for a rest. We did 5 more minutes of work.

If he tired of the game, I had him jog on the treadmill
for 2 minutes. I timed him and learned
that after 2 minutes of jogging, he sat for 8 minutes of instruction. I gained 3 minutes. For the rest of his kindergarten year, I did
not ask him for more than 5-10 minutes of concentration at a time.

Do you know what happened? We stopped fighting. He stopped saying school is too hard. He is learning to read. He has learned to count and add and
subtract. He is now a 6 year old,
finishing up kindergarten. He can sit
for 15 minutes of instruction. That’s
what I call progress.

It was hard for me to let go of
the idea of school. It was difficult for
me to allow learning to happen in its own time.
It was worth it. He tells everyone how good he is at math. And even though I dropped handwriting, he
learned to write his name (and mine).

From Alpha Omega came the following post which is enlightening to me. Our school's 'foreign' language is going to be sign language. Sign language is often underutilized as a language; however, being a former hospital worker I often had need to know some signs, but did not have the skill. Our hospital had to have a list of interpreters and one was for sign language. This list was for the incident that we'd have to communicate with a patient or family member regarding their health care decisions and medical consent. I don't plan to formally teach a class till the children are in 8th grade. However, we do the alphabet, food, sports, people, etc. all the time. They have flash cards and we have a game called See It and Sign It.

I enjoyed the post!

Why study a foreign language? This is a question that is on the lips of many people in the USA, children and adults alike. It is heard in schools, on the street, and in the workplace. “Why should I learn ______ ?” Sometimes this question is voiced in frustration, sometimes in rebellion against a situation, and sometimes with legitimate curiosity.
The answers to this question are numerous. They range from “you need it for college” to “to get a good job” to “in order to witness.” As Christians we need to ask for biblical reasons first, not the reasons that our culture gives us, even though some cultural reasons are very good.

So, are there any biblical reasons to study a foreign language?
First we must note that there are no verses in Scripture that say “Thou shalt learn a foreign language.” There are, however, biblical principles that can be applied to language learning. Three biblical reasons to study a foreign language include the following:
1. Love your neighbor
2. Care for creation
3. Praise God

Obviously Scripture tells us to do all these things, but what do they have to do with language?

First, Christ came to us in a way that we can understand. The Word (notice the reference to language here) became flesh. If Christ loved us in this way, then we ought also to love others in a way that they can understand best. If we are living in a homogenous community, then learning another language in order to love our neighbor is not necessary. If, however, if we live in a community in which people speak more than one language, learning the language(s) of the people around us is an application of loving our neighbor. A person’s language is very close to their heart and is actually the lens through which they see, evaluate, and think about the world. To speak someone else’s language is to reach into their heart and their part of the world. It is a way of being Christ to them.

Second, we are told in Genesis 1 and 2 to care for creation. Languages are part of creation. As such, we should study them so that we can care for them and bring them into accordance with God’s will. This includes more than just not using bad words; it also involves understanding how best to express ourselves with beauty and accuracy to the people with whom we are speaking. Language is also the way in which we study the world. As mentioned above, a language is the lens through which we see and evaluate the world. Therefore, language gives insights into different aspects of creation. If we look at all the words in English, Spanish, or French, we can see words borrowed from other languages (moccasin, kangaroo, rajah, hippopotamus, gestalt, etc.) that help us to better describe and understand the world. When we study other languages we gain insight into the world that God has given us and that he has commanded us to care for. With better understanding and more insights, we can take better care of the world.

Third, we can study another language to praise God more fully. Anything we study should bring us to our knees in awe and praise of the one who made and designed it. Language is no exception. Language also gives us new words and expressions that we can use to praise God. Some of these words and phrases may not be available to us in our own language. By learning a new language we gain insights not only into creation but into God himself, since different cultures may focus on different aspects of God’s being. (This is not to say that every human believes what is right about God; we still need to examine Scripture to determine what is true.) Each language also gives us different sounds and arrangements of the sounds that we can use to praise God. There is a different sound of beauty when we praise God in Spanish than when we praise him in English.

Though each of these points can be further examined and explained, these three reasons and their given explanations provide inspiration and an understanding of the important role language plays in our relations with our neighbor, creation, and our Creator.

I've used multiple brands. I've paid a lot and a little. I've purchased them at the health food store, Amazon.com, from a MLM company and from my friend.

After about two years of buying these oils, I found a friend that had signed up to be a Wellness Advocate for doTERRA essential oils - which I'd heard of multiple times but never sought information about this particular brand. I attended my first class for essential oils and found that there was so much that I did NOT know! For example, there is a difference between aroma therapy and actual therapy associated with various oils - pure oil will have therapeutic benefits on some health issue.

I had questions too. Where did these oils come from? When were they discovered? How do we know what works on what issue? What testing is done to say it is safe? What is an 'essential' oil? Why is it named 'essential' oil? Some questions have been answered. Other questions, I'm pondering the answers and continuing to research.

I decided to sign up to get the 11 most popular oils from doTERRA by signing up under my friend, Heather. I received The Family Physician Kit in the mail and opened them. Immediately I thought they were 'stronger' than the other brands I'd tried. Also I realized these did not have the warning label 'For External Use Only'. I added a drop of lemon essential oil to my glass of water - it was refreshing. Then I ordered a few more doTERRA blends to target personal and specific health issues. Those blends did it. I was hooked! These were different!

I began researching online, attending more classes, using more of doTERRA oils, asking questions, and logging information. I watched so many videos on YouTube regarding oils, science, and the Wellness Advocate promotions, etc.

I always knew why I've been drawn to these oils in general. God provides everything for us that we need. He knew it would be centuries before modern medicine would create vaccines, antibiotics, and other medical miracles. He intended for us to use these oils! God created the first antibiotics, mood enhancers, fever assistance, and more.

As one of my up-line has recently mentioned, God knew before the Garden of Eden that we would need these provisions. The Egyptians used oils. The doctors of the early Americans and Native Indians in the 1600s, 1700s, 1800s used tonics and herbs to treat illness and health issues. The University of Maryland Medical Center states this on their website (Aromatherapy history).
More recently, René-Maurice Gattefossé, a French chemist, discovered the healing properties of lavender oil when he applied it to a burn on his hand caused by an explosion in his laboratory. He then started to analyze the chemical properties of essential oils and how they were used to treat burns, skin infections, gangrene, and wounds in soldiers during World War I. In 1928, Gattefossé founded the science of aromatherapy.

Aromatherapy did not become popular in the United States until the 1980s. Today, many lotions, candles, and beauty products are sold as "aromatherapy." However, many of these products contain synthetic fragrances that do not have the same properties as essential oils. (http://umm.edu/health/medical/altmed/treatment/aromatherapy)

So why doTERRA? I've researched all I could before feeling comfortable (at this point) to recommend these oils in my homeschooling consulting business to moms who need advice with kids' focus, hyperactivity, or distractability issues. doTerra has a scientific basis; I have a medical background. It makes sense.
