February is Black History Month and we are learning about Booker T. Washington and his humble beginnings as a slave as well as his rise to becoming a principal of Tuskegee College. We are reading his autobiography which has enlightened my family as to the process that it toook for the black community to accomplish what was necessary to overcome the situation of slavery, poverty, and lack of education.
Autobiography Up From Slavery demonstrates the need for the slaves to learn about "the bath" and the "tooth-brush" as well as incorporating hard work at the collegiate level for this race. He believes in industrial education as well 'book learning'. I too, am a fan of work ethic in education. Work in manual labor complements academic education as well.
Here is the lesson that I've created to enhance our 'book learning' into a visual format as well. Hope you enjoy it!
