7 Survival Skills for our students in The Global Achievement Gap

In the book I've been reading and rereading, I find seven skills that are coined "Survival Skills" by Tony Wagner.  These skills are as follows:
  1. Critical thinking and problem solving
  2. Collaboration Across Networks and Leading by Influence
  3. Agility and Adaptability
  4. Initiative and Entrepreneurialism
  5. Effective Oral and Written Communication
  6. Accessing and Analyzing Information
  7. Curiosity and Imagination
He suggests that these skills are not taught in the American public school system.  These basic skills are not included in what teachers must teach - especially when preparing our brightest students for standardized achievement tests.

I would like to know if you have any experience or thoughts in teachers actively teaching these skills.

I will then dissect each skill as well as elaborate on each one related to my experiences in the public school and private education of students.  I will then give examples of how home educated students often achieve related to these skills.

It is also surprising to me that he calls these the 'survival' skills - not the 'thriving' skills, 'above and beyond' skills or 'excellent' skills.  What does the word "survival" connote?
